Grab a friend and join us for Cosmic Nights: Meet Ultima Thule. Learn more about current missions and hot topics in astronomy and space exploration in this fun evening of science and socializing. We’ll have a custom planetarium show, guest lecturer, music, drinks, science demonstrations and games at this 19+ event.
Learn new insights from the space probe New Horizons as it flies by Ultima Thule, a mysterious object in the farthest reaches of our Solar System. This will be the most distant flyby in human history nearly a billion miles beyond Pluto.
6:30pm - 10:00pm – Drinks | Music | Games | Demonstrations | Lecture | Planetarium Show
7:30 or 9:00pm - Planetarium Star Theatre show – “Journey to the Edge of the Solar System”
Every Solar System is defined by the gravitational influence of its Sun, but where does that influence end and the next Solar System begin? We’ll take you on a visual journey to explore areas on the edge of the Solar System and take a closer look at Trans-Neptunian Objects, the Kuiper Belt, and the Oort Cloud. We’ll also chart the journey of the Voyager 2 space probe that was launched to study the outer reaches of the Solar System over 41 years ago.
*Choose between either the 7:30pm or 9:00pm planetarium show when purchasing your ticket.
8:00pm and 9:00pm - Lecture by Dr. JJ Kavelaars – “Ultima Thule!”
Astronomer Dr. Kavelaars of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria will be lecturing on “Ultima Thule!”.
In the course of his work Dr. Kavelaars has been responsible for the discovery of eleven satellites (moons) of Saturn, eight of Uranus, and four of Neptune, and over a hundred minor planets. Kavelaars is the Coordinator of the Canada–France Ecliptic Plane Survey which is part of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey "CFHTLS": a project dedicated to the discovery and tracking of objects in the outer Solar System.
7:00pm-9:00pm – GroundStation Canada Theatre - “The Fastest Ship in the Universe”
The New Horizons spacecraft reached Pluto in 9 years making it the fastest spaceship ever built. In a short demonstration we’ll show you the techniques employed to get a spacecraft moving at top speeds. Warning: There will be some loud explosions in this show.
We’ll also have some trivia about real and fictional spacecrafts with prizes for the winners!
TICKETS: $20 early bird tickets until January 10th, $25 after.
Tickets available online through Eventbrite until 12:00pm on January 24th.
