Staff Spotlight - Lauren Park
The Space Centre wouldn’t be what it is today without our amazing staff. We’d like to take a moment to shine the spotlight on a member of our little space family.
What is your position at the Space Centre?
Marketing & Events Assistant. I create content and run the social media channels here at the Space Centre. I come up with and schedule posts, keep up engagement, create visuals, and sometimes run around the Space Centre to find interesting things and people to showcase! In fact, I’m currently answering my own questions as I write this! I also help promote events that are coming up.
What is your favorite thing about space?
I love the beauty of space. There are so many wonders in the universe and they are extremely breathtaking. I think the ways in which we photograph space is really interesting. And we’ve come such a long way. I mean, just this year, the first photograph was taken of a black hole. That’s kind of crazy. Photography, in essence, is capturing light, and a black hole is where light can’t escape. They used some technique called VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry). It basically works by synchronizing a bunch of telescopes so they work together as a virtually giant telescope! Also, the Juno space probe has taken some magnificent photos of Jupiter and its clouds. The clouds are super marble like. The photos look more like a painting than a planet. I thought it was too cool not to share and so I posted a few to our social media channels.
What’s your favorite memory working at the Space Centre?
Probably the event we had with the Canadian Space Agency for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. There was a livestream with the astronauts David Saint-Jacques and Robert Thirsk. The coolest part though, was having Dr. Jenni Sidey-Gibbons here in person. She was so inspiring and great at interacting with the audience. She talked about her astronaut training and she was so excited about going to space one day, her enthusiasm was honestly infectious. It was super sweet seeing the way she interacts with kids. She’s such a great role model for young women.
What do you recommend people check out at the Space Centre?
I recommend people check out the observatory! Not everyone knows it’s open to the public. It is open Saturday evenings and you can do some great stargazing! Another thing I recommend, while it’s not something you can visit, is checking out our Dedicate a Star program! I think gifting a star is such a unique and thoughtful present and you can even choose which constellation your star is in.
