Cosmic Nights - AI: The Changing Face of Technology
Grab a friend and join us for Cosmic Nights – AI: The Changing Face of Technology. Learn more about current missions and hot topics in astronomy and space exploration in this fun evening of science and socializing. We’ll have a custom planetarium show, guest lecturer, music, drinks, science demonstrations and trivia at this 19+ event.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are all around us. From chatbots and Gmail filters to product recommendations on Amazon, AI is changing the face of technology. Join us as we explore the social impact, ethics, science and uses for artificial intelligence with a leading expert in the field. We will also be looking at AI’s role in Canada’s new space strategy including the Lunar Gateway project.

7:00pm, 7:30pm, 8:00pm, 8:30pm – “AI, Science Fiction and Trivia” (GroundStation Canada Theatre)
Artificial Intelligence was dreamed up by science fiction authors long before it became a reality. Join us as we revisit some of our favourite sci-fi tales, enjoy a live science demo, and take part in a round of trivia. Prizes will be given to the winners!
8:00pm and 9:00pm “Artificial Intelligence: the World in 2029” lecture by Dr. Kevin Leyton-Brown (Joyce Whalley Room)
Artificial intelligence is already moving from science fiction to reality, and Canadian scientists are leading the way. (Canada was the first country in the world to develop a "national AI strategy"!) Kevin Leyton-Brown, the Director of UBC's Centre for Artificial Intelligence Decision-making and Action (CAIDA) will describe the scientific journey that has brought us to this point, will explain some of the core ideas that make modern AI technologies work, and will offer some educated speculation about how AI will impact our lives a decade from now.
Dr. Kevin Leyton-Brown is a professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia and holds a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute; he is also an associate member of the Vancouver School of Economics. He holds a PhD and M.Sc. from Stanford University (2003; 2001) and a B.Sc. from McMaster University (1998). He studies artificial intelligence and machine learning with a focus on connections both to microeconomic theory and to the design of algorithms for hard combinatorial problems. He is the Director of UBC's Centre for AI Decision-making and Action (http://caida.ubc.ca).
7:30pm and 9:30pm “To the Moon and Beyond” - Planetarium Star Theatre
In the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL 9000 was the on board artificial general intelligence that controlled the computer systems on a spacecraft headed to Jupiter. Today NASA is planning to head back to the Moon with the newly announced Lunar Gateway space station project. Canada will be contributing to project by creating a CANADARM 3, and by taking part in developing an artificial intelligence system to run the station. In this interactive visual presentation in the planetarium we’ll look at the future of AI technology in space.
*Choose between either the 7:30pm or 9:00pm planetarium show when purchasing your ticket.*
